“THE PALACE OF THE UNMARRIED ”
The Ghotul Muria are tribal forest dwellers known for their musical and dance skills and for their Ghotul – a communal dormitory hut where children are sent from a young age until puberty to spend the night together.
Encroaching industrialization, deforestation and violent political upheavals have forced many Muria to leave their forest homes and the Ghotul as overnight dormitory has all but disappeared.
The Muria children still dance and sing at weddings and funerals and have become an attraction on the tourist trail;
